Works closely with Director on curatorial and collections management initiatives. Develops and leads special tours and conducts research on the collection. Leads the effort to recruit and train volunteers and docents. Reports to the Director and Chair of the French Legation Museum, Daughters of the Republic of Texas (DRT), Inc.
Leads the research, interpretation and curation of the Museums collection. Works collaboratively with the Programs Coordinator to plan and implement education programs, special tours, events, and workshops, as well as other programs on Republic of Texas history. Employees modern material culture theory to assist the public in understanding the experience of past residents of the house and the cultural landscape.
Oversees and documents the preservation and ongoing maintenance of historic and other buildings at the French Legation Museum. Works with contractors to secure needed services and oversees their work. Integrates preservation documentation into interpretation as changes occur.
Provides support in all areas of administration including but not limited to mailing, filing, correspondence; data-base administration. Assists with bookkeeping duties as needed.
Supports the Directors efforts to seek out and make recommendations of grant opportunities for museum projects to the grants subcommittee of the French Legation Committee. Helps prepare grant applications and assists the Director with grant reporting.
Qualifications
Knowledge in public history, Texas and Southern American History, American material culture; masters degree preferred. Knowledge of museum exhibit design and production; artifact collections management, collections development, and museum cataloging systems and procedures. Decorative arts and architectural history knowledge highly desired. Experience with the management of a historical collections, and strong understanding of ethical standards concerning collections. Highly skilled at written and oral communication. Must possess strong knowledge of current American material culture s theory and research methods.
About the Company/Organization
The French Legation began in 1841 as a private home built for the French chargé d’affaires, Alphonse Dubois. The property has had two other significant owners including Dr. Joseph Robertson, and the State of Texas who appointed the Daughters of the Republic of Texas the custodians of the property. The French Legation Museum was opened to the public in 1956.

Wage commensurate with experience. Part Time, Hourly Wage
