Contract Program Aide, Aurora History Museum, CO


Responsible for assisting the Museum’s curatorial staff with duties related to education programming, collections management, and exhibit research and installation.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Work with the education curator on education section projects including coordinating and overseeing the children’s summer camps at the DeLaney Farm Historic Site, developing and giving guided group tours and school programs of the Museum and Farm, researching and developing new exhibits for the Museum’s Hands-on room, managing the Museum’s birthday party program, maintaining and inventorying the Museum’s education collections, hands-on teaching objects and craft supplies, assisting with weekend and evening education events, and coordinating and teaching school and group outreach programs. Working with the collections curator on projects including assisting with describing, measuring, numbering, and photographing incoming artifacts (registration), entering collections data into the Museum’s PastPerfect database, assisting with artifact research for upcoming exhibits, and working with the exhibits team on exhibit installation and design.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor’s degree in history, education, museum studies, public history, anthropology, or related field preferred.

Experience: Experience working in a museum setting. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Experience presenting education programs. Creative, detail-oriented, and outgoing with the ability to engage an audience and make learning fun. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.

Knowledge: Familiarity with Aurora and Colorado history; awareness of museum principles and practices and teaching techniques.

Abilities: Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, citizens, and other museum professionals; communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; working knowledge of standard museum practices especially when related to collections management and exhibition; handle sensitive or stressful situations with tact and diplomacy; make formal and informal presentations; oversee and coordinate work of volunteers; work flex hours including nights and week-ends as needed.

Skills: Strong organizational and time management, problem solving, communications and teamwork skills; program conceptualization and delivery skills; skills in the use of audio visual and computer equipment; strong interpersonal skills.
