The Historic Preservation Planner I is an hourly position with up to 30 hours per week. The planner assists the Historic Preservation Director in carrying out the requirements of the Historic Preservation Program.
Job Responsibilities
Duties include, but are not limited to, assisting the public with questions regarding the process and applications for Certificates of Appropriateness (COA); reviewing applications for COAs in locally designated historic districts; assisting the Historic District Board of Review and attending public meetings; conducting regular site visits and inspecting work for compliance with COAs; and, working on special projects as assigned. Special projects include, but are not limited to, production of preservation-related educational brochures and documents; identification, research, and documentation of historic properties; preparing preservation-related presentations and public speaking. The planner assists other MPC and City departments by serving on various committees and their ability to work well with others and as part of a team is essential. The qualified candidate must have excellent communication skills and be efficient in responding to inquiry requests from internal and external customers.
Qualifications
- Professional experience of three years working in the field of historic preservation or a Masters Degree in historic preservation, architectural history, architecture, urban planning or related field.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties.
- Experience with design review in local historic districts is preferred. Public speaking and ability to work well with others is required. *Experience with Microsoft Office Suite is required; experience with ArcMap and Adobe Software is preferred. Salary is commensurate with education and experience.
