The Heritage Documentation Programs (Historic American Buildings Survey/Historic American Engineering Record/Historic American Landscapes Survey), a division of the National Park Service, seeks applications from qualified students for summer employment documenting historic sites and structures of architectural, engineering and landscape significance throughout the country.
Projects last twelve weeks, beginning in May/June. Salaries range from approximately $6,000 to approximately $11,000 for the summer, depending on job responsibility, locality of the project, and level of experience.
Job Responsibilities
Duties involve on-site field work and the preparation of measured and interpretive drawings and written historical reports for the HABS/HAER/HALS Collection at the Prints and Photographs Division of the Library of Congress.

Applicant must be a U.S. Citizen.

Heritage Documentation Programs administers HABS (Historic American Buildings Survey), the Federal Government’s oldest preservation program, and companion programs HAER (Historic American Engineering Record), HALS (Historic American Landscapes Survey), and CRGIS (Cultural Resources Geographic Information Systems). Documentation produced through the programs constitutes the nation’s largest archive of historic architectural, engineering, and landscape documentation.

Note that the application procedure has changed from that of previous years. Applicants should take care to follow the new application instructions closely. Incomplete and/or improperly submitted applications will not receive consideration.
Applicants who have worked for HDP during the past five years (2007-11) , and who are not seeking an increase in their previous salary level, need only submit a cover letter and updated resume directly to the HDP office. All other applicants, including previous HDP employees who are seeking an increase in salary level, must be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program and must submit a new and complete application package.
