Regional Site Manager, Historic New England, NH


The Regional Site Manager, Maine and New Hampshire, for Historic New England is responsible for the management and marketing of the Gov. John Langdon House, Rundlet-May House, and Jackson House in Portsmouth, New Hampshire; the Gilman Garrison House in Exeter, New Hampshire; and the supervision of two additional site managers, collectively responsible for a total of six historic museum properties in the region. This position serves as Historic New England’s liaison to the communities and operates the museums in conjunction with other internal teams and within procedures established by headquarters in Boston. The primary goals of the Regional Site Manager are to provide the greatest public access to the sites through museum initiatives and to amplify the organization’s impact in our communities while meeting revenue and attendance targets. Position reports to the Museum Operations Manager.

Responsibilities: Meet or exceed established attendance and revenue goals through innovative marketing, programs, general tours, group tours, private events, and community relations. Supervise Maine site managers, providing administrative, collegial, and on-site support to facilitate the operation of the historic sites in the region. Serve as the first line in monitoring for property care and collection concerns. Help coordinate on-site property and collections care work. Hire, train, and supervise house guides. Train interpreters on tour content, guide professionalism, and security measures. Occasional evening and weekend work required.

Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, preferably in American history, business, art or cultural history, historic preservation, or museum studies. Four years job-related experience and the ability to work independently. Experience with non-profit institutions managing historic site operations, including financial skills. Prior supervisory experience, problem solving ability, and familiarity with team approach and multi-tasking. Strong communication skills. Word processing and spreadsheet skills. Ability to drive and a valid driver’s license required. Ability to work weekend and evening hours as required.

Master’s degree in a relevant field, strong background in American history, architecture, and/or decorative arts, and experience developing and leading interpretive tours and creating innovative public programs preferred.
