The Beverly Historical Society seeks a registrar or archivist for August – December, approximately 20 hours weekly, to inventory the Society’s collection. The Society provides stewardship for a diverse collection including documents, photographs, furniture, and textiles, and is engaged in a longterm project to create an inventory of the thousands of items in its collection. Strengths of the collection include Revolutionary War era papers of some of the region’s leading figures and documents detailing the maritime history of the community. The successful candidate will report to the Curator of Collections and join a team of talented staff working in a collaborative environment.
Job Responsibilities
Responsibilities include: conducting an inventory and basic condition assessment; cataloging and photographing the collections; and supervising an intern. Candidates will possess a Masters degree in history, museum studies or library science (specialization in archival management is a plus); at least two years of professional experience processing museum collections; knowledge of practices and techniques of museum descriptive standards; excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to lift and move materials weighing up to 40 lbs; ability to work independently; and excellent organizational skills and strong attention to detail. Knowledge of Beverly and Essex County history is a plus, as is familiarity with PastPerfect.
