The Sustainability Coordinator is responsible for developing and expanding the sustainability efforts and programs of Galveston Historical Foundation. This position requires a creative, driven professional, eager to find new ways of serving the Galveston community. Reports to: Director of Preservation and Conservation Services.
Job Responsibilities
- Develop the Center for Coastal Heritage, a recently launched initiative for studying the unique factors impacting historic preservation efforts in coastal settings. Through research and outreach, the CCH will take a leadership role in educating residents of Texas and the Gulf Coast about sustainability and environmental awareness.
- Develop the Green Revival Certification Program, helping to guide homeowners through green rehabilitation projects.
- Provide training on sustainable materials and green architectural practices as they apply to historic buildings.
- Educate property owners on lead-based paint safety, energy efficiency and structural reinforcement of historic buildings.
- Write grant applications, press releases, and bid documents.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the department head or Executive Director and working flexible hours as necessary to provide services.
- Perform duties as staff liaison with the Green Revival Committee and coordinate efforts with the board of directors, volunteers and other staff.
Qualifications
Education: Candidates should have an undergraduate degree in architecture, construction, historic preservation or a related field. We will give preference to those with a graduate degree as well as those with coursework in historic preservation. Training and certifications in green building practices and Geographic Information System (GIS) is also helpful.
Skills: Ability to interact one-on-one and in groups with diverse clients and general public and communicate clearly in oral and written formats. Strong organizational, computer (Microsoft Office, Excel, PowerPoint, as well as other means of producing reports and presentations) and writing skills, working knowledge of historic preservation, rehabilitation and construction techniques and materials, architectural history. This position may involve moderate to heavy lifting (25 lbs. or greater), advanced mobility on project worksites, as well as working outdoors on a regular basis. Post-emergency assessment, recovery and assistance will be one requirement of this position. Must be able to balance many tasks at once and shift priorities to accommodate change.
Experience: Experience in rehabilitation of historic buildings, in community development, urban planning, or historic preservation field. Experience developing bid documents, project budget management and with construction administration. Previous public speaking, lecturing and interaction with public commissions and boards preferred.
